Lunch Boxes: At A Glance – Children versus Parents Perspective

Posted

When did lunch boxes become a demand product in the market? Paleontologist suggested that, history of lunch boxes dated as early as the 1800s. Sometime, between the mid to late of the 1800s, the pail metal lunch boxes were used by working men to store their lunches (Whole Pop Magazine). Lunch boxes were not a child thing.

Overtime, as any other products introduced in the market, lunch boxes evolved too. Ranging from a simple, plain inexpensive plastic container, ordinary metal box, to expensive over the top plastic and/or metal materials with different cartoon characters designed on it. Lunch boxes are probably one of the products in the market that has a wide range of buyers. It covers many market segments and demographics; regardless of age, income bracket and location.

Almost all working individuals and school age children have lunch boxes. But the main markets are always the children. Manufactures always redesign their lunch boxes with different colors or with famous movies and TV characters to entice younger buyers.

How do children differ from their parents when it comes to choosing lunch boxes? Children’s choices are usually influence by what they see new on TV, what their friends have, or the years of parades of characters like Hello Kitty, Prince and Princesses, and Super Heroes. The concept of “health and environmental consciousness” never comes into the mix when making choices. What is pleasing to their eyes is what they want.

Parents on the other hand, when buying lunch boxes are often influence by their budget, convenience when packing and cleaning, and size, if it is for their kids. Later, health and environmental effects of utilizing the boxes became a factor too. They worry about their health, their children’s, as well as its negative consequences to the environment.

Numerous research results show the presence of BPA (Bisphenol A), a chemical products use in many plastic products has an adverse effect to consumers’ health, especially when foods are reheated using the plastic. In this case, BPA free lunch boxes are on top of the list.

Today, almost all plastic lunch boxes and metal lunch boxes with plastic lid available in the market are labeled BPA free. Some labels even suggest that it is safe to use when warming food and food product in microwaves. There are still some buyers prefer metal with plastic lid lunch boxes because of its durability and less plastic materials used.

One product that is available in the market right now that seems to be gaining market is the U Konserve Nesting Trio 3-Pack. As described, it is made of stainless containers with plastic lids, BPA free, and leak proof. It uses LDPE (low-density polyethylene) material for its lid, which makes its flexible but sturdy. And since they all nest inside one another they take up very little storage space.

There are many more similar products available in the market; it only needs to be searched to fit each customers personal preferences. It will always be part of every household, working individuals, school children and business entities. It will not go away but market will continue to evolve to suit the changing market taste and preferences.
